Autumn
Textbook: Part 1, pp. 24–26
GoalDescribe an autumn scene; know the words poem and quatrain; spot a comparison.
New words
fallen leaves · xazonharvest · hosilcrane (bird) · turnaquatrain · to‘rtlik
Explanation
A poem is artistic speech told with feeling and rhythm. A poem of four lines is called a to‘rtlik (quatrain). The textbook has a poem about autumn, made of two quatrains, by Muhammad Yusuf, a well-known Uzbek poet. We do not quote his lines; we read our own text. In descriptions we use comparison: we liken one thing to another (leaves like golden coins).
Worked examples
“Golden autumn”. In September the leaves of the trees begin to turn yellow. When the wind blows, they fall like golden coins. Grapes and pomegranates ripen in the orchards and farmers gather a rich harvest. In the sky cranes fly south in a line. Children hurry to school with new bags. Autumn is somewhat sad on one side, and very generous on the other.
Comparison: leaves – golden coins. Personification: autumn is generous.
