Explanation

According to the commentary, the excerpt comes from the beginning of the novel, events are told in Farida’s voice, and her sincerity, openness, energy and straightforwardness draw the reader in. The author first sets Farida apart from the others, then brings her together with Komron, showing how a lively girl changes before love; Komron’s portrait is drawn through Farida’s inner gaze, mixed with irony and barbs. The conversations with Mishel and Mujgon play an important role in Farida’s coming to understand her own feelings. The commentary says that in the later parts of the novel Farida’s life continues against the background of the social-political and cultural-educational problems in the life of the Turkish people in the period of the First World War. It also recommends comparing Farida and Komron’s relationship with heroes of Uzbek literature such as Otabek–Kumush or Anvar–Ra’no.

Worked examples
Example: Farida calls Komron a “yellow scorpion” yet likes his gifts – psychological depiction showing her two feelings (anger and interest).
Example: although the novel begins with one girl’s personal story, it widens to the social background of the whole people’s life – so it cannot be called only a love novel.
Class activity

Comparative table: compare Farida–Komron and Otabek–Kumush (or Anvar–Ra’no) on “age, setting, feeling of love, conflict.”
