Explanation
According to the textbook, the epic is devoted to the heroic and tragic fate of Nazrul Islam, and through his bitter lot the poet expressed his own pain, because at that time Uzbekistan too was part of the former Union, the people did not hold their freedom in their own hands, freedom of speech was restricted, and national values and enlighteners had suffered repression. In the “Song of Revolt” Nazrul Islam calls the Indian people to awaken against age-old bondage, but the crowd does not understand him and this helps the colonisers; the poet is deprived of freedom. In the third chapter his address to his mother reveals human feelings convincingly, and the poet, without despairing, believes his land will become free. In the last chapter the dream is fulfilled, but the suffering in captivity robs him of these days. The textbook rates the epic as one of the finest examples of 20th-century Uzbek epics.
Worked examples
Example: The author expressing the pain of his own time through the example of India is symbolic expression: the troubles of one people are shown through the fate of another.
Example: The crowd’s failure to understand the poet is a tragic conflict: he struggles for the people, yet the people turn against him.

Practice
1
Why did the author turn precisely to the fate of Nazrul Islam?
Because through it he could express the pain of his own time – restricted freedom and freedom of speech and trampled national values.
2
What tragedy is created at the end of the epic by the dream coming true while the poet cannot feel its joy?
The greatest dream comes true, but the poet cannot enjoy it because of suffering: this shows the weight of the price of heroism.
3
What hope does the poet express in the “Tutqunlikda” chapter?
He hopes his land will become free and for peace for his mother.
4
State in your own words the lesson of the epic for a reader of today.
Honest struggle for freedom and justice, unity of the people, the value of freedom of speech and remembering the price of devotion.
