Explanation

In the root «гар-/гор-» we write «а» under stress and «о» without stress: «нагар» – «нагореть». In «зар-/зор-» we write «а» without stress («зарянка», «озарение»); under stress we write the vowel we hear («зарево», «зори»). In «лаг-/лож-» we write «а» before «г» and «о» before «ж»: «прилагать – приложить». In «кас-/кос-» we write «о» before «н» («прикоснуться») and «а» before the suffix «-а-» («касание»). In «раст-/ращ-/рос-» an unstressed «а» is written before «ст» and «щ», and «о» elsewhere: «растение», «наращивать», «выросший»; exceptions: «отрасль, росток, ростовщик, Ростов». The root «мок-» means letting liquid through («вымокнуть»), «мак-» means dipping into liquid («обмакнуть»). «равн-» means equal («равноправие»), «ровн-» means smooth or level («выровнять»).

Worked examples
«Равноправие» has «равн-», meaning “equal rights”. «Выровнять дорожку» has «ровн-», meaning “to make level”.
«Касание – прикоснуться»: in the first the suffix «-а-» follows the root, so we write «а»; in the second «о» is written before «н».
Class activity

“Which rule?” A card shows a word with a gap; the student fills it in and names the rule that applies.

Practice
1
Insert the letter: «наг…реть», «з…рянка».
2
Fill in the gaps: «прил…гать усилия», «прил…жить справку».
3
«Вым…кнуть» and «обм…кнуть»: what meaning does each root give?
4
Why is «росток» written with о although «ст» follows?
