Job interview (A)
Textbook: pp. 34–37
GoalThe job interview: basic questions; should / shouldn’t for advice; preparing for an interview.
New words
interview · suhbatcandidate · nomzodstrength · kuchli tomonweakness · zaif tomon
Explanation
Common interview questions: Tell me about yourself. Why do you want this job? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Where do you see yourself in five years? To give advice about preparing we use should + base verb, the same for all persons. You should arrive ten minutes early. You shouldn’t interrupt the interviewer. Question: Should I bring my certificates? Other advice phrases: I think you should..., Why don’t you...? Should is a soft recommendation, not a strong obligation; for real obligation use must or have to. Support your answers with concrete examples: “I am responsible. For example, I looked after the school garden for a year.”
Worked examples
You should read about the company before the interview, and you shouldn’t check your phone while the manager is speaking.
Interviewer: What is your biggest weakness? Candidate: Sometimes I spend too long on details, but I am learning to plan my time.
Class activity
Role-play: one student is the interviewer and another the candidate; a third gives two pieces of advice with should.
Practice
1
Give advice: Your friend has an interview tomorrow. (arrive / early)
You should arrive early.
2
Make it negative: You should wear very casual clothes. (formal job)
You shouldn’t wear very casual clothes.
3
Write a question with should: bring / photos.
Should I bring photos?
4
Why is it better to give an example when you say “I am hard-working”?
An example proves the quality, so the interviewer can believe you.
