Explanation
In a book essay answer three questions: what is it about, why did you like it and who would you recommend it to? Plan: introduction (title, author), short summary (without spoilers), what you liked, recommendation. Write the summary in the present tense: The story begins when... The main character decides to... To give an opinion: I was impressed by..., What I like most is..., I would recommend it to anyone who... Vary your complex sentences with who / which relative clauses and when / while time clauses. In a conversation about books ask: What kind of books do you enjoy? Have you read anything by...? Do you prefer paper books or e-books? The aim is to support your opinion, not just to say “good”.
Worked examples
Bygone Days (O‘tkan kunlar) is a novel by Abdulla Qodiriy, which tells the story of Otabek and Kumush. What impressed me most is the way the author describes everyday life.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical stories. It is a long novel, but it is worth reading.
Class activity
“Book club”: each student recommends a favourite book in three sentences and the class votes.
Practice
1
Write the opening sentence of an essay about a book you know (title + author).
For example: “Bygone Days” is a famous novel by Abdulla Qodiriy.
2
Write one sentence with “which” about a book.
For example: The novel, which was written in the 1920s, is still popular.
3
Ask a classmate about e-books.
Do you prefer paper books or e-books?
4
Why should a book summary avoid giving away the ending?
So that other readers can enjoy discovering the story themselves.
