Explanation
A time budget is a chart that shows how you divide the 24 hours of the day among different activities. Like money, we “spend” time: spend time on something / spend time doing something, devote time to, set aside time for. These phrases help to describe a chart: I spend about eight hours sleeping; I devote two hours a day to studying; I set aside half an hour for reading. To describe a share, say a third of the day, a quarter, 25 per cent. Calculation: a quarter of 24 hours is 6 hours. When you make a chart, first write fixed activities (sleep, school, meals), then interesting ones, leave some free time and check that the total is 24 hours.
Worked examples
Ali spends a quarter of his day at school, about eight hours sleeping, and two hours on sport. The rest is free time.
I devote ninety minutes a day to English. That is about six per cent of my day.
Class activity
Students draw their daily budget as a pie chart and explain it to a partner in four sentences.

set aside

one third of the day
3
A student spends 6 hours at school, 8 sleeping, 2 on homework, 3 on meals and chores. How many hours are free?

4
Why should the total of a time-budget chart be 24 hours?
Because a day has 24 hours; a different total would mean a mistake in your plan.
