New words
career · kasb, martabaemployer · ish beruvchiqualification · malaka, tayyorgarlikvacancy · bo‘sh ish o‘rni
Explanation
Key words about work: employer, employee, career, qualification, vacancy, part-time and full-time job. To talk about a plan or intention made before speaking we use to be going to: am / is / are + going to + base verb. I am going to apply for a place at a medical college. Affirmative: She is going to study law. Negative: They aren’t going to work abroad. Question: Are you going to take a gap year? We also use going to for a prediction based on present evidence: Look at those clouds – it is going to rain. For a decision made at the moment of speaking, will is better: “The phone is ringing.” “I’ll answer it.”
Worked examples
My cousin is going to become a pilot, so she is going to join an aviation school next year.
We aren’t going to move to the capital. Are you going to look for a part-time job this summer?
Class activity
“Two truths and a lie”: each student states three plans with going to; the class guesses which one is untrue.
Practice
1
Complete: My brother ___ (be) going to be an architect.
is
2
Make a question: you / going to / study / abroad?
Are you going to study abroad?
3
Which is better: “The bag is heavy. I (am going to / will) carry it for you.”
I will (I’ll) – a decision made at the moment of speaking.
4
Why is “going to” better than “will” in: “Look at that car – it is going to crash!”?
Because the prediction is based on evidence we can see now.
