Youth organization in Uzbekistan (A)

Textbook: pp. 98–101
GoalReporting verbs: say, tell, ask, explain, suggest, promise, advise, warn; talking about a youth organization.
New words
leadership · yetakchilikactive · faolvolunteer · ixtiyoriy qatnashchicommunity · jamiyat
Explanation

When we report someone’s words, the verb usually moves one step back in time: “I am a volunteer,” he said → He said (that) he was a volunteer. Say has no person after it: She said that...; tell needs a person: She told me that... Other reporting verbs have their own patterns: suggest + -ing (She suggested joining a club), promise + to-infinitive (He promised to help), advise + person + to-infinitive (They advised us to apply early), warn + person + not to (She warned us not to be late), ask + person + to-infinitive (He asked me to speak slowly), explain + that (She explained that the club met on Fridays). Youth organizations and projects in Uzbekistan (for example YLDP, the Young Leaders Development Project described in the textbook) encourage young people to be active, to volunteer and to develop leadership.

Worked examples
“We meet every Friday,” the leader said. → The leader said that they met every Friday.
She advised the new members to read the rules, and he suggested starting with a small project.
