World literature (A)
William Shakespeare (1564–1616) was an English playwright and poet, born in Stratford-upon-Avon and linked in London with the Globe Theatre. He wrote about 37 plays and 154 sonnets, including Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Plays are divided into tragedies, comedies and histories. Adjectives for evaluating works: gripping, moving, tragic, humorous, memorable, timeless. Adjective + preposition: famous for, known as, fond of, interested in, afraid of, bored with, good at. Examples: Shakespeare is famous for his tragedies. Hamlet is known as one of the greatest plays. Remember the order of adjectives and comparison: the most famous play, more moving than a comedy.
