Use of the dash and quotation marks
The dash is used at the beginning of each line in a dialogue; between a nominal predicate without a copula and the subject; before a generalizing word that follows homogeneous parts; between the author’s words and direct speech; on both sides of a word or sentence being explained; between the parts of a conjunction-less composite sentence expressing contrast; to set off set-off parts; and between words expressing equality or comparison. For example: «Kitob – eng yaxshi do‘st». In quotation marks go direct speech and citations; words used figuratively or sarcastically; titles of literary works, newspapers, magazines, plays and paintings; names of enterprises, institutions and hotels; makes of vehicles, plant varieties and product names. An ending after the quotation marks is written together with them: «O‘tkan kunlar»ni o‘qidim.
“Dash or quotation marks?”: the teacher gives an example; pupils explain why the mark is used.
