The text and its kinds: narrative and descriptive text

A chain of sentences joined to each other in meaning and structure so that they form one whole – spoken or written – is called a text. The text maker’s purpose may differ: to tell about an event, thing or person, to describe them, or to reason about them. Accordingly three kinds of text are distinguished: the narrative text, the descriptive text and the reasoning text. If the author wants to tell an event from beginning to end, he or she writes a narrative text. It gives a sequence of events: the opening (where, who, when), the development of events and the outcome. In a narrative text the verbs are mostly in the past tense and show actions one after another. The narrative text is used a lot in conversation and in literary works.
