Review of direct and indirect speech. Work on a text

Direct speech gives someone’s words exactly, and the author’s words say who spoke. Direct speech is written inside quotation marks. If the author’s words come first, a colon follows them: M: «K». If the author’s words come after, a comma and a dash follow the direct speech and the author’s words begin with a lowercase letter: «K», – m. If the direct speech ends in a question or exclamation mark, that mark is kept: «K?» – m. If the author’s words fall in the middle: «K, – m, – k». In indirect speech someone’s words are retold from our own point of view, without quotation marks; the whole sentence becomes a simple sentence (the predicate takes a verbal-noun or participle form), and pronouns change according to the new speaker’s viewpoint.
