Comparing things by quality (degrees of comparison)
Textbook, pp. 23–29
ЦельForm the comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives and compare things in speech.
Degrees of comparison help us compare things. The comparative simple form ends in «-ее»: «красивее», «быстрее», «умнее»; in some adjectives the last consonant changes: «строгий» → «строже», «яркий» → «ярче», «простой» → «проще», «тихий» → «тише», «глубокий» → «глубже», «дорогой» → «дороже». Special forms: «высокий» → «выше», «низкий» → «ниже», «далёкий» → «дальше», «широкий» → «шире», «узкий» → «уже», «хороший» → «лучше», «плохой» → «хуже», «большой» → «больше», «маленький» → «меньше». Compound form: «более красивый», «менее красивый» (it changes by case and gender; the simple form does not). There are two ways to compare: «Самарканд больше, чем Хива» or «Самарканд больше Хивы» (genitive, no «чем»). Superlative: «самый красивый», «красивейший» or «красивее всех» (the most beautiful of all).
Примеры
“Горы и моря” (Mountains and seas). «Эверест выше Килиманджаро, а Килиманджаро выше многих гор мира. Озеро Байкал глубже, чем Иссык-Куль. Зимой день короче, чем летом, а ночь длиннее. Мне кажется, самый красивый край — это наша Родина.» (Everest is higher than Kilimanjaro, and Kilimanjaro is higher than many mountains. Lake Baikal is deeper than Issyk-Kul. In winter the day is shorter than in summer, and the night is longer. I think the most beautiful land is our Motherland.)
Comparing: «Наш учитель строгий, а директор строже.» (Our teacher is strict, but the director is stricter.) «Этот портфель дешевле, а тот дороже.» (This bag is cheaper, that one dearer.) «Книга интереснее, чем фильм.» «Она бежит быстрее всех.» (She runs faster than everyone.)
Работа в классе
“Who compares best?” Two teams pick two objects (e.g. «стол» and «шкаф», «слон» and «мышь») and make comparing sentences: «Слон больше мыши.» The team with the most correct comparatives wins.
