(Geese-Swans) is a Russian folk tale The textbook gives it in the retelling by A. N. Tolstoy. A folk tale has no known author: people told it by word of mouth. Typical features: an opening («Жили-были …»), repetition (the girl asks three helpers in turn: the stove, the apple tree and the river), magic helpers (nature helps the girl) and a happy end. The idea: do what adults ask you, and be polite and kind. The girl is first rude, so the stove, the apple tree and the river tell her nothing; on the way back she says thank you and they help her. Vocabulary: «сказка» — a tale, «подхватить» — to snatch up, «спрятать» — to hide, «в погоню» — in pursuit.
(Mum asked the girl to look after her brother, but she got absorbed in play. The geese-swans snatched the little boy to a dark forest. The girl ran after them and asked the stove, the apple tree and the river, but she was rude and nobody helped. Then she found Baba Yaga’s hut and took her brother. On the way back she politely asked for help and the river, the apple tree and the stove hid the children. The geese-swans never found them.)
Vocabulary: «молочная река» (a river of milk), «кисельные берега» (banks of kissel, a fruit jelly drink) — magic images of the tale.
