Negative particles

The particle «не» expresses negation: «Он пришёл» – «Он не пришёл». When «не» occurs twice in one sentence, the result is an affirmation: «Она не могла не заметить ошибку» = «Она обязательно заметила ошибку». In exclamatory and interrogative sentences «не» with «только» gives a generalising meaning: «Чего только не было на ярмарке!» = there was everything at the fair. The particle «ни» strengthens negation: «ни капли», «ни минуты», «ни копейки». Spelling: «не» is written separately with verbs («не помню»); together with words that are not used without «не» («ненастье», «невзгода»). With nouns, adjectives and adverbs «не» is written together if the word can be replaced by a synonym without «не» («нелёгкий» = «трудный», «невесело» = «грустно»); it is written separately when there is a contrast («не …, а …») or with «совсем, вовсе, отнюдь, далеко не».
