§ 17. Possessive adjectives
Textbook: pp. 47–52
ЦельForm and decline possessive adjectives and tell them from relative adjectives.
Possessive adjectives are formed only from animate nouns and answer «чей?»: they show whose an object is or which animal it belongs to. Suffixes: «-ин-/-ын-» («Нина → Нинин», «Ваня → Ванин»), «-ов-/-ев-» («Тимур → Тимуров», «Николай → Николаев») and «-ий» («собака → собачий», «волк → волчий»). Russian surnames in «-ов, -ев, -ин» are possessive adjectives in origin: «Петров», «Лебедев», «Ильин». Adjectives in «-ий» take «ь» in the other cases: «козий сыр – козьего сыра». A possessive adjective often becomes relative in meaning: «собачья будка» (the dog’s kennel – possessive), «козий сыр» (cheese from goat’s milk – material).
Declension: «Нинина книга – Нининой книги – Нининой книге – о Нининой книге».
Работа в классе
“Whose is it?” The teacher shows an object; students answer with a possessive adjective: «Это Сашина ручка», «Это Тимуров карандаш».
Упражнения
1
Form possessive adjectives: «Нина, Ваня, Саша, Николай, волк, собака».
Нинин, Ванин, Сашин, Николаев, волчий, собачий
2
Complete: «Это … (Лена) сумка».
Ленина
3
Put in the genitive: «козий сыр», «Нинина книга».
козьего сыра; Нининой книги
4
Why is «козий» in «козий сыр» treated as relative, not possessive?
The cheese does not belong to a goat; it is made from goat’s milk, so the adjective names the material. In «козья тропа» the meaning is close to possessive.
