Explanation

A multi-national is a company that works in several countries; its parent company is based in one country. A joint venture is a business set up together by two or more partners; a joint-stock company has shares. Advantages of working for a multi-national: high standards, training, international experience, sometimes good pay. Disadvantages: strict demands, long hours, less time at home. Questions at a job interview: How many people work for the company? Do I need to speak English? What training do you offer? Can I move to another country? In the past some multi-nationals sold harmful products in places where laws were weak; this is why international control and honest advertising matter.

Worked examples
A pupil’s interview notes. Good points: free training, modern equipment. Differences from local firms: more English, more rules. Negative points: very long hours at busy times.
The parent company is in another country, but the Uzbek branch employs local staff. The company works in several countries, so it is a multi-national. A firm that works only in its home country is not.
Class activity

“Interview”: in pairs A is an employee of a multi-national and B is a reporter; six questions are asked and the answers are noted.
