Explanation
Parts of a shoe: heel, sole, toe. Describing condition: My trainers are muddy but comfortable. The left heel has come off. The sole is worn out. We say something must be repaired or cleaned with need + -ing: My bike needs oiling. The curtains need washing. The grass needs cutting. It has a passive meaning (needs to be oiled / washed / cut). Giving advice: You should have your coat dry-cleaned. He should have his eyes tested. They should have the roof checked before winter. Question: How often do you have your bike serviced? Shoe repairs are done by a shoemaker in a workshop.
Worked examples
My trainers are in bad condition. The sole is worn out and the left heel is loose. They need mending. I should have them repaired at the shoemaker’s.
