Explanation

Uzbekistan is a sovereign democratic republic; independence was declared on 31 August 1991 (the holiday is celebrated on 1 September). The Constitution was adopted on 8 December 1992; a new version was adopted by a referendum on 30 April 2023. The head of state is the President, elected by general, direct, secret ballot for seven years. Power is divided into three branches: legislative (the Oliy Majlis), executive (the President and government) and judicial (the courts). The Oliy Majlis has two chambers: the Legislative Chamber (150 deputies) and the Senate (65 senators). Four senators are elected from each territory (12 regions, the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Tashkent city), and 9 are appointed by the President. Both chambers serve five years. Passive: The President is elected for seven years. The Senate is made up of 65 members.
