Explanation
Devices and what we do with them: smartphone – take a photo, make a call, go online; laptop – write a document, send an email; e-book reader – read a book; memory stick – store data; games console – play a video game; camcorder – make a video. Giving advice: If I were you, I would buy ... . It is lighter / easier / cheaper. Tim Berners-Lee was born in London on 8 June 1955; he studied physics at Oxford; in 1989, while working at CERN, he proposed the World Wide Web, in 1990 he built the first browser and server, and the first website went online in 1991. He was knighted in 2004. Important: the Internet and the Web are not the same – the Internet is the network of computers, the Web is the system of pages on that network.
Worked examples
