Explanation
Reviews help us choose a film. A review has four parts: 1) basic information – title, where you saw it, genre, actors, director; 2) a short plot – do not give away the ending; 3) interesting facts – characters, music, special effects; 4) your opinion and a rating. In the plot we use the Present Simple: A clownfish looks for his lost son. To say when you saw it, use the Past Simple: Last week I saw ... . For opinion: I liked it because ... . I would recommend it to ... . In a review write real facts correctly: title, year, director.
Worked examples
Last weekend my family watched “Finding Nemo” (2003), an animated adventure directed by Andrew Stanton. A clownfish called Marlin crosses the ocean to find his son Nemo, and a forgetful fish called Dory helps him. The colours of the sea are beautiful, and the film is funny and warm. I liked it because it shows that a parent’s love and friendship can be very strong. I would recommend it to everyone. Rating: 5 out of 5.
Choosing tips: read two reviews, check the genre, look at the age rating and ask a friend.
Class activity
“Review workshop”: in pairs each pupil writes part of the review; then combine and read to the class.
