Explanation
A review. Indefinite pronouns «кто-то, что-нибудь, какой-либо, кое-что» are written with a hyphen and show something unknown. Negative pronouns with «ни-» need «не» in the sentence: «Никого не видел»; those with «не-» mean “there is nobody to ...”: «Мне некого видеть». With a preposition «ни» and «не» are split off: «ни у кого, не у кого». Demonstratives: «это» is invariable, «этот, тот, такой» agree with the noun. Finding the pronouns in a text and naming their type is the best way to review.
Worked examples
“Потерянный ключ” (The lost key). «Утром кто-то из ребят потерял ключ от класса. Никто не знал, где он. Спросить было не у кого: все ушли на зарядку. Тогда кое-кто вспомнил, что видел что-то блестящее у окна. Этот ключ лежал там! Такой радости мы давно не видели.» (In the morning one of the pupils lost the classroom key. Nobody knew where it was. There was nobody to ask: everyone had gone to morning exercises. Then somebody remembered seeing something shiny by the window. That was where the key lay! We had not seen such joy for a long time.)
Type of pronoun: «кто-то» — indefinite; «никого» — negative; «такой» — demonstrative; «некому» — negative.
Class activity
“Three baskets”. Cards go into three baskets: indefinite / negative / demonstrative. Pupils drop a word in and explain why.
Practice
1
Add the hyphen: «кое кто, что то, какой нибудь».
кое-кто, что-то, какой-нибудь
2
Which type is each: «никто, некто, этот, кто-либо»?
никто — отрицательное; некто — неопределённое; этот — указательное; кто-либо — неопределённое
3
Insert: «Сегодня ... не звонил. Мне ... звонить».
никто; некому
4
Why does «Никто не знал» have two negatives, but «Спросить было не у кого» only one?
With a «ни-» pronoun the verb also takes «не»; «не у кого» carries the negation itself and the verb is an infinitive.
