Explanation

Ivan Zakharovich Surikov (1841–1880) was a Russian poet who wrote about ordinary people. The excerpt from «В ночном» describes a summer village night. «Ночное» is when village boys drive horses to pasture and watch them overnight. In the poem it slowly darkens, birds fall silent, far away «зарницы» (flashes of heat lightning) flicker. A bell and a horse’s snort break the silence. The children remember their grandmothers’ tales: a witch flying on a broom, a leshy (forest spirit) above the forest, a winged serpent. So the night landscape becomes fantastic. The frightened children light a fire, and it lights up the dark. Real scenery and imagination mix in the poem — the childhood feeling on the border between tale and life. Sound imagery (звукопись) gives the poem a living tone.

Worked examples
«Ночь у костра» (summary in my own words). «Наступил вечер, и в поле стало тихо. Мальчики пасли лошадей и сидели у костра. Они вспомнили страшные сказки: про ведьму на метле, про лешего и про огненного змея. Темнота казалась живой, и ребята придвинулись ближе к огню. Костёр трещал и освещал поле далеко-далеко.» (Evening fell and the field grew quiet. The boys watched the horses and sat by a campfire. They remembered scary tales: about a witch on a broom, a leshy and a fiery serpent. The darkness seemed alive and the boys moved closer to the fire. The fire crackled and lit the field far away.)
Vocabulary: «леший» (forest spirit), «ведьма» (witch), «боязно» = «страшно» (frightening), «пляска» = «танец». Adjectives: «косматый» (shaggy), «крылатый» (winged).
Class activity

“Night pasture”. The class sits quietly. The teacher reads the poem slowly in a dark mood; pupils draw or name the sounds they hear (bell, horse, wind).
