Explanation

“Oygul bilan Baxtiyor” is a tale in verse (ertak-doston), reworked by the poet from a folk tale and written in seven-syllable lines. The action begins in the land of Jambil, where slaves rise against the khan’s oppression, led by the old slave Darxon and his daughter Oygul. The forces are unequal, the uprising is crushed and Darxon is killed. The old slave Tarlon sets Oygul adrift on the river in a chest to save her. After adventures Oygul is swallowed by a huge fish; the young herdsman Baxtiyor catches that fish, and when it is cut open Oygul comes out alive. Later Oygul and Baxtiyor gather an army and free Jambil from the cruel khan. The doston praises freedom, courage and honest work.

Worked examples
Example: Tarlon setting Oygul adrift in a chest shows that a good deed needs a brave heart.
Example: it is a tale because of its magic adventures (Oygul coming out of a fish alive); a doston because of its verse form.
