Explanation

The ruboiy is a quatrain form widespread in Eastern poetry, written in certain metres of aruz; a thought is expressed completely in four lines. Bobur’s life can be seen in his ruboiys. In one he says that far from home, in exile, nobody can be truly happy. In another the poet says he cannot find rest even for a moment, and that he came to this land of his own will, but returning is not in his hands. In yet another he regrets having left his own land and turned toward India. Another ruboiy holds the wisdom that kindness returns kindness and cruelty returns cruelty. Themes such as the pursuit of knowledge and valuing the company of friends also occur.

Worked examples
Example: “g‘urbat” means being far from home; the word expresses Bobur’s longing for his homeland.
Example: “loyalty for loyalty, cruelty for cruelty” – a near-proverb wisdom; a ruboiy gives a short compact thought.
