Choosing an epigraph for an essay
Textbook: pp. 26–27
ЦельChoose a suitable epigraph for an essay and know how to write it.
An epigraph is a wise saying, proverb, idiom or short extract from poetry or prose chosen to suit the content of the essay. It is usually written after the plan and before the essay text begins, on the right side of the page. If the epigraph is not a question or exclamation, a full stop is put at its end; if it has an author, the name is given in brackets. An epigraph is not compulsory, but one that fits the topic and the inner idea of the essay strengthens its effect. When choosing it, look at how exactly it fits the topic, not at how nice it sounds.
Примеры
Topic “Work — the key to happiness”. Epigraph: “Mehnat qilgan to‘q yashar.” (Proverb) (He who works lives in plenty.)
An epigraph in question form gets no full stop: “Vatan qayerdan boshlanadi?” (if it has an author, the name is given in brackets).
Работа в классе
Epigraph contest: a common topic is set; groups try to find the most fitting proverbs and wise sayings.
