Explanation
Pencils are often tied in bundles of 10. One bundle is ten. Put 1 more pencil next to the bundle. Now we have 10 and 1. That is eleven. 10 and 2 is twelve. 10 and 3 is thirteen. 10 and 4 is fourteen. 10 and 5 is fifteen. Each number is one more than the number before it.
Worked examples
10 and 1 is 11 (eleven).
10 and 3 is 13 (thirteen).
Count on from 10: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. Each step is 1 more.
Class activity
Make a ten. Put 10 buttons in a small box or inside a ring of string. Add 1 button outside and say eleven. Add another and say twelve. Go up to fifteen. Then take one away at a time and count back.
