Explanation
Look at the rows of butterflies. The first row has 1. Each new row has one more than the row above it: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. When we add one more, the number goes up by one. Count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Worked examples
1 butterfly and 1 more is 2 butterflies.
2 kites and 1 more is 3 kites.
4 dots and 1 more dot is 5 dots.
Class activity
Count and clap. Sit in a circle. The first child says 1 and claps. The next says 2 and claps twice, and so on up to 5. Then start again from a new child.
