Explanation

Look at both hands. Ten fingers make 10. Fold some fingers down. The fingers up and the fingers down are two parts of 10. 1 and 9 make 10. 2 and 8 make 10. 3 and 7 make 10. 4 and 6 make 10. 5 and 5 make 10.

Worked examples
1 and 9 make 10. The frame is full.
3 and 7 make 10.
5 and 5 make 10. One hand and the other hand.
Class activity

Hide and tell. Put 10 buttons in a line. The child closes their eyes. Hide some buttons under a cup. The child opens their eyes, counts the buttons still showing and says how many are under the cup. Lift the cup to check. Then swap.
