Explanation

A number line helps us add. Find the first number and stand there. Hop forward. Each hop is one step. 1 + 4: start at 1. Hop 4 steps. You land on 5. So 1 + 4 = 5.

Class activity

Frog on the cards. Write the numbers 1 to 10 on ten paper cards and put them in a row on a table. Use a small toy or a coin as the frog. Say a sum such as 4 + 3. The frog starts on 4 and hops 3 cards forward. Say where it lands.
