Explanation
The numbers go in order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Each number comes after the one before it. 5 comes just after 4. 5 comes just before 6. If a number is missing in the row, look at the numbers beside it.
Worked examples
5 comes just after 4.
The missing number is 6. It comes after 5 and before 7.
Start at 5. Take one step to the right. You are at 6.
Class activity
Number hop. Draw the numbers 1 to 9 in chalk on the ground, or on paper squares. Say a number. The child hops to it. Then say: hop to the number after it, hop to the number before it.
