More, fewer or the same

Joyful Mathematics: Chapter 3
GoalCompare two groups by matching, and say which has more, which has fewer or if they are the same.
New words
more · a bigger number of thingsfewer · a smaller number of thingssame · equal; just as many
Explanation

To compare two groups, match one thing in the first group with one thing in the second group. If some things are left over, that group has more. The other group has fewer. If nothing is left over in either group, the groups are the same. Here there are 4 children and 5 rotis. 1 roti is left over, so there are more rotis.

5 children and 5 sweets. Each child gets one sweet. Nothing is left. The groups are the same.
balloonschildren
6 balloons and 4 children. Each child holds one balloon. 2 balloons are left over. There are more balloons than children.
If there are fewer plates than people, some people will have no plate.
Class activity

Sharing game. Take 6 seeds and 4 small cups. Put one seed in each cup. How many seeds are left over? Are there more seeds or more cups? Then try with 5 seeds and 5 cups.
