Explanation
Many pictures have equal groups. Look for how many groups there are. Look for how many are in each group. Then add. In class, 3 children sit on each mat. 4 mats hold 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 children.
Worked examples
Nani puts 5 small bunches of grapes on each leaf plate. 3 plates have 5 + 5 + 5 = 15 bunches.
Each bunch has 2 balloons. 6 bunches have 12 balloons.
There are 2 ducks in each pond. 5 ponds have 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10 ducks.
Class activity
Find the groups. Look around your home. Find equal groups, such as 2 shoes in each pair or 4 legs on each chair. Say how many groups there are and how many in each. Add to find the total.
