Hydrolysis of salts

Textbook: pp. 32–41
GoalUnderstand the essence of salt hydrolysis; predict the medium of a solution from the strength of the parent base and acid and write hydrolysis equations.
New words
hydrolysis · gidrolizneutral medium · neytral muhitacidic medium · kislotali muhitalkaline medium · ishqoriy muhit
Explanation

Pure water is a very weak electrolyte: H₂O ⇄ H⁺ + OH⁻, with [H⁺] = [OH⁻], so it is neutral. When a salt dissolves and its ions combine with the ions of water to form a weak electrolyte, the process is called hydrolysis. Salts of a strong base and a strong acid (KNO₃, NaCl, Na₂SO₄) do not hydrolyse and the medium is neutral. In a salt of a weak base and a strong acid (Al(NO₃)₃, CuSO₄, NH₄Cl) the cation hydrolyses: Al³⁺ + H₂O ⇄ AlOH²⁺ + H⁺, and the excess H⁺ makes the medium acidic. In a salt of a strong base and a weak acid (Na₂CO₃, K₂S) the anion hydrolyses: CO₃²⁻ + H₂O ⇄ HCO₃⁻ + OH⁻, and the medium is alkaline. A salt of a weak base and a weak acid (Al₂S₃) hydrolyses completely: Al₂S₃ + 6H₂O → 2Al(OH)₃↓ + 3H₂S↑, so it cannot be obtained from solution. Heating and dilution strengthen hydrolysis; to keep a solution from hydrolysing it is best stored cold and concentrated.

Worked examples
Na₂CO₃: strong base NaOH + weak acid H₂CO₃. Molecular: Na₂CO₃ + H₂O ⇄ NaHCO₃ + NaOH; ionic: CO₃²⁻ + H₂O ⇄ HCO₃⁻ + OH⁻. The medium is alkaline (phenolphthalein turns crimson).
FeCl₃: weak base Fe(OH)₃ + strong acid HCl. First step: Fe³⁺ + H₂O ⇄ FeOH²⁺ + H⁺; the solution is acidic and blue litmus turns red. On boiling, further steps also occur.
Class activity

“Salt – medium – indicator”: groups get cards with NaCl, Na₂CO₃, NH₄Cl, KNO₃, Al₂(SO₄)₃, K₂S, work out base and acid strength, predict the medium and the litmus colour. Then the teacher tests one or two solutions with litmus paper (students do not handle the salts themselves).

Practice
1
What is the medium of a Na₂SO₄ solution and why?
2
Write the first step of CuSO₄ hydrolysis in ionic form and state the medium.
3
In 3Na₂CO₃ + Al₂(SO₄)₃ + 3H₂O → 2Al(OH)₃↓ + 3CO₂↑ + 3Na₂SO₄, how many grams of Al(OH)₃ precipitate from 3 mol Na₂CO₃? M(Al(OH)₃) = 78 g/mol.
4
Why can Al₂S₃ not be made by mixing solutions of Al³⁺ and S²⁻?
