Explanation
See somebody do means I saw the whole action: I saw him leave (he left and I saw it). See somebody doing means I saw the action in progress: I saw him leaving (he was leaving). The verb after the object has no to in these patterns. Duration: It takes me ten minutes to wash the dishes. Changing to the passive: Present Simple – The room is cleaned every day. Past Simple – The letter was written yesterday. Present Perfect – Samarkand has been added to the World Heritage List. Present Continuous – A new terminal is being built. If the doer is not important it is dropped; if it matters we add by. Course review: first conditional (If it rains, we will stay), second (If I had wings, I would ...), third (If I had known, I would have ...), have something done, wish, reported speech.
Worked examples
Has the postman come? Yes, I saw him bring a parcel half an hour ago. Where is Dad? I saw him washing the car a minute ago.
People celebrate the holiday every year. → The holiday is celebrated every year. Engineers are building a new bridge. → A new bridge is being built. The council has repaired the road. → The road has been repaired.
