Textbook: p. 35
GoalProject: a debate. The motion, giving arguments, opinion phrases and rules for a respectful discussion.
New words
motion · taklif (debat mavzusi)argument · dalil, argumentto oppose · qarshi chiqmoqto support · rozi bo‘lmoq / qo‘llab-quvvatlamoq
Explanation
A debate is an organised argument. The motion is the statement to be discussed, for example: “Private schools make education less fair.” Group A agrees with the motion, Group B opposes it. In preparation each group writes four or five reasons with examples. Useful phrases: I believe that ... ; In my opinion ... ; The main reason is ... ; For example ... ; I agree with ... but ... ; I’m afraid I disagree because ... . Rules: speak in turn, listen to others, argue against ideas not people, and keep to the time. At the end each side gives a short summary and the class or judges vote. The winner is the side with the more convincing arguments, not the side that holds the “right” opinion.
Worked examples
Group A: The main reason is fairness. If only rich families can pay, other children lose opportunities. Group B: I’m afraid I disagree. Parents have the right to choose, and private schools can offer smaller classes.
Closing statement (own sample): We have heard strong arguments from both sides. However, we believe that every child deserves the same chance, so we ask you to support the motion.
Class activity
Class debate: three minutes of preparation, three one-minute speeches per side, a one-minute summary; observers note the best argument and vote.

I’m afraid I disagree because ...

Why should you criticise the idea, not the person, in a debate?
Because personal attacks are disrespectful and make the debate useless; arguments are what count.
