A day in the life of a pupil
Textbook: pp. 32–33
GoalA pupil’s day: before / after + -ing, sequencing, school-day words.
New words
registration · ro‘yxatga olish (davomat)free period · bo‘sh dars soatidouble lesson · qo‘sh darsbreak time · tanaffus
Explanation
We show the order of events with before and after. If both actions have the same subject, the subject is dropped and the verb takes -ing: Before leaving the house, I feed the cat. After finishing my project, I play football. If the subjects differ, we need a full clause: Before the guests arrive, we tidy the room. Typical school-day words: registration (the daily check of who is present), lesson (about 45 minutes), break, canteen, set (a group by level). Interview questions: What time do you leave home? What do you do after arriving at school? What do you do before going to sleep?
Worked examples
Before leaving home, Dina checks the timetable. After finishing the last lesson, she goes to the library. Before going to bed, she reads for half an hour.
A day at school (own sample): First bell at 8.00. Registration. Lessons from 8.10 with a 10-minute break after each. Lunch in the canteen at 12.30. After lessons there are clubs; after clubs pupils go home and do homework.
Class activity
“Interview”: pairs write eight questions, interview the neighbouring pair and report in five sentences (Before going..., after doing...).
Practice
1
Write the correct form: Before (go) out, I switch off the lights.
Before going out
2

Why can we not drop “the guests” in “Before the guests arrive, we tidy the room”?
Because the two clauses have different subjects (the guests and we), so the -ing form cannot be used.
