The anthem of Uzbekistan
Textbook: Part 2, pp. 45–47
GoalExplain the importance of the state anthem; know the difference between a poem and an anthem; read a text expressively (pause, logical stress).
New words
anthem · madhiyato perform · ijro etmoqpause · pauzalogical stress · mantiqiy urg‘u
Explanation
The textbook has the poem “O‘zbekiston madhiyasi” by Abdulla Oripov, which describes the deep feelings the anthem stirred in the poet. We do not retell the poem. The state anthem is the solemn song of the state. The words of the State Anthem of the Republic of Uzbekistan were written by Abdulla Oripov and the music was composed by Mutal Burhonov; it was adopted on 10 December 1992. A poem, however, is an ordinary work and is not performed at solemn ceremonies like the anthem. In expressive reading we divide thoughts with pauses and highlight the important word with logical stress.
Worked examples
“When the anthem sounds”. A competition of young athletes took place in our city. During the award ceremony the flag was raised and the anthem began to sound. The people in the hall stood up and kept silent. I saw the eyes of the boy beside me begin to shine. When the anthem ended everyone applauded for a long time. Then I understood that the anthem unites all people who love their country.
Reading exercise: “When the anthem sounds || the people in the hall stood up.” (pause ||; stress on “yangraganda”).
Class activity
“Pause and stress”: children read one sentence with three different stresses; the class says how the meaning changes.
