Explanation
Buttons come in many colours, sizes and shapes. They can decorate clothes, bags, notebook covers and pictures. To make a pattern we repeat colours and sizes in turn or place them equally on both sides of the centre, which is symmetry. First we try the buttons on paper, then sew the favourite arrangement onto cloth or felt.
Worked examples
Red, blue, red, blue… is a repeating pattern. A large button in the middle with small ones around is a symmetrical pattern.
Class activity
You need: 10–15 different buttons, felt (15x15 cm), a needle, thread, scissors, paper. Steps: 1) Place the buttons on paper and try pattern ideas. 2) Choose the best one and copy it onto the felt. 3) Sew the buttons on one by one in order. 4) Check your work: are the buttons firm and the knots at the back? Safety: follow the needle and scissors rules; when finished count and collect all buttons and needles.
