Learning to sew
A needle is a sharp tool, so we follow the rules strictly. We keep needles in a pin cushion or a box. We never put one in the mouth, pin it to clothes or leave it on a desk. We count needles before and after work. We never bite thread, we cut it with scissors. In a simple running stitch the needle goes down through the cloth, then up again, making stitches of equal length.
You need: a needle, coloured thread (40 cm), scissors, felt or fabric (10x10 cm), a pin cushion. Steps: 1) Thread the needle and tie a knot at the end. 2) Push the needle up from the back of the fabric. 3) Put it down 1 cm away, then bring it up again. 4) Make 8–10 stitches along a straight line and finish with a knot at the back. Safety: use the needle under adult supervision; after work put it straight into the cushion and check the count.
