Let’s make a robot
Textbook pp. 44–45
GoalMake a robot from card and waste material.
New words
robot · robotmachine · mashinaantenna · antennabutton · tugma
Explanation
The word “robot” comes from the Czech “robota”, which means “work”. A robot is an automatic machine that makes human work easier. Robots work in factories, hospitals and space. A robot we build is a model: its parts are card boxes, caps and straws. To put each part in the right place, we first draw a plan.
Worked examples
A big box = body, a small box = head, caps = eyes and buttons, straws = arms and antennae.
Class activity
You need: 2 card boxes (big and small), plastic caps, straws, coloured paper, glue, scissors, foil. Steps: 1) Draw the robot’s parts in a plan. 2) Glue the small box on top of the big one to make head and body. 3) Glue caps as eyes and buttons and straws as arms and antennae. 4) Decorate with coloured paper. Safety: if boxes or straws need cutting, ask an adult; do not put small caps in your mouth.
