Explanation

An ant is an insect. Its body has three parts: head, chest and abdomen. It has three pairs, that is six, legs. With two antennae on its head it smells and feels things. Ants live in families and each has its own job: some guard the nest, some find food. That is why the ant is a symbol of hard work.

Worked examples
Three black ovals (head, chest, abdomen) + 6 legs + 2 antennae = an ant.
Class activity

You need: black and brown coloured paper, scissors, glue, white card, white paper. Steps: 1) Cut three ovals: the smallest is the head, the middle one the chest, the biggest the abdomen. 2) Glue them in a row on white card, touching a little. 3) Cut and glue 6 thin legs on the chest and 2 antennae on the head. 4) Add a white circle with a black dot for the eye. Safety: when cutting thin strips, turn the paper and keep the scissors still.
