Explanation
A hand fan is a simple tool that moves air to cool you. In ancient times there were no air conditioners, so people really needed fans. Fans are made of paper, cloth, wood or feathers. Some peoples also use fans in dances. In the shape of a watermelon, the fan looks like a summer fruit.
Worked examples
A half circle: red inside, green and white rim, black seeds, a handle below.
Class activity
You need: card, red, green, white and black paper, scissors, glue, wooden stick (handle). Steps: 1) Cut two half circles from card. 2) Glue a red half circle on one, then white and green strips round the edge. 3) Add black drop shapes as seeds. 4) Place the stick between the two cards and glue them together. Safety: when cutting the curve turn the paper, not the scissors; check the wooden handle is smooth with no splinters.
