Explanation
A ladybird is a beetle with red wings and black dots. It eats small pests that suck plant juice, so it helps gardeners. Its bright colour warns predators not to eat it. The dots show the kind of ladybird, not its age. To make wings that open, we glue each wing only along its top edge.
Worked examples
A red half circle = a wing, a black circle = head and body, black dots decorate it.
Class activity
You need: red and black paper, scissors, glue, card, black felt-tip pen. Steps: 1) Cut a big black circle (body) and a small one (head). 2) Cut a red circle in half to make two wings. 3) Glue the wings on the body only along the top edge, near the head, so they can open. 4) Add black dots and two antennae. Safety: do not use too much glue; point the scissor tips away from other people.
