The plant world of Uzbekistan
Plants in Uzbekistan differ from place to place. In the desert grow saxaul, camel thorn and kandym (Calligonum), which resist drought. By rivers there are willows, weeping willows, reeds and other riverside plants. In the mountains grow juniper, walnut, pistachio, almond, dog rose and many medicinal herbs. In spring the desert and the foothills are covered with tulips. Some beautiful plants grow in very few places (for example, the Fergana tulip and the Uzbek carnation) and are in the Red Book. People endanger them by picking flowers, grazing livestock and cutting trees. The Botanical Garden in Tashkent grows and studies thousands of plant species. To protect a rare plant, do not pick the flowers and let them make seeds.
“Rules for nature” poster: in class write 5 rules (do not pick flowers, do not break branches, do not leave litter, do not light fires, do not disturb animals) and make a neat page.
