Explanation

The Earth’s water is gathered in oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, glaciers and underground. Some is in the atmosphere as vapour and cloud, and there is water inside living things. Natural bodies of water: ocean, sea, river, lake, marsh. Artificial ones: pond, reservoir, canal. A river often starts in the mountains and flows into a sea, a lake or another river. Most of the Earth’s water is salty (oceans and seas); we cannot drink it because it has too much salt. Fresh water is much scarcer, so we must save it: turn off the tap while brushing teeth, shower rather than fill a bath, and fix dripping taps. Drinking water should be boiled because raw water may contain harmful bacteria.

Worked examples
The Amu Darya and Syr Darya are natural bodies of water; the Charvak Reservoir is artificial.
A dripping tap can waste dozens of litres of water in a day.
Class activity

“Water use” survey: write where your family uses water each day (washing, dishes, laundry, watering). Where can water be saved? Draw a “Save water” poster.

Practice
1
Give 2 examples each of natural and artificial bodies of water.
2
Why can’t we drink sea water?
3
Name 3 ways to save water.
4
Why do we boil drinking water?
