Remembering summer
Textbook: Part 1, pp. 4–7
GoalUse summer memories to recall questions about nature: why water flows downhill, how air feels in the mountains, and the natural places of Uzbekistan (desert, mountain, river, lake).
New words
water park · akvaparkartificial lake · sun’iy ko‘ldesert · cho‘l
Explanation
What we saw and did in summer raises many questions. Water flows from high to low because the Earth pulls everything toward itself. The word “akva” comes from Latin and means “water”, so a park with water rides is an akvapark. Most of Uzbekistan is plains, steppe and desert (Qizilqum, Mirzacho‘l, the Ustyurt plateau), while the north and east have high mountains. Lakes that appeared because of people’s work (reservoirs, ponds) are artificial; lakes that formed by themselves are natural.
Worked examples
A waterfall pours downward because the Earth pulls the water down.
Aydarkol is one of the largest artificial lakes in Uzbekistan: it formed when Syr Darya water was let into a low area on the edge of the Qizilqum.
Class activity
“My summer map”: draw a simple map in your notebook. Mark the places you visited in summer (mountain, river, garden, city) and write one question for each, for example: “Why is the air cool in the mountains?” Swap questions in class.
Practice
1
Why does water flow from top to bottom?
The Earth pulls everything, including water, toward itself.
2
What does the word “akva” mean?
water
3
Name three deserts or steppe areas of Uzbekistan.
For example: Qizilqum, Mirzacho‘l, the Ustyurt plateau
4
How does an artificial lake differ from a natural lake?
People create an artificial lake; a natural lake forms by itself.
