Trees, shrubs and herbs
A tree has one thick trunk covered with bark and a wide crown of branches on top. Trees are broad-leaved or coniferous. A shrub has several thin stems growing from the root and is lower than a tree (dog rose, raspberry, currant). A herb has a green, juicy stem and lives a shorter time than trees and shrubs. Annual herbs are born, grow and die within one season (bean, pumpkin, chamomile). Biennial herbs grow root, stem and leaves in the first year, and flower and make seeds in the second (cabbage, turnip). Perennial herbs live for many years (aloe). The banana is not a tree; it is a perennial herb.
“Three layers”: draw a three-layer forest on the board: trees on top, shrubs in the middle, herbs below. Children stick plant cards on the right layer.
