Explanation

Animals in Uzbekistan are adapted to where they live. In the desert you find sand mice, jerboas, the desert monitor, jackals and solifugids; many tortoises and lizards live there too. In the mountains live the snow leopard, the argali (wild sheep) and the brown bear. By the rivers (riverside woods) live foxes, jackals, hares and many birds. The Red Book is a list of animals and plants that are disappearing; it is red because red is a warning colour. Animals become fewer because of hunting, loss of habitat and human activity. The Turan tiger once lived in the riverside woods of our rivers and has now disappeared completely. Nature reserves, limits on hunting and caring for nature help protect animals.

Worked examples
The snow leopard and the saiga are rare animals listed in the Red Book.
The jerboa hops fast in the desert and is active at night.
